Advent day 23: Why Brussel sprouts?

Advent day 23 ... why brussel sprouts?

See advent day 22 here

Brussel sprouts are a real take them or leave them -  I think it's probably the most dramatic part of Christmas dinner!

Sprouts are part of the cabbage family and were first called 'Mini cabbages.'

Although grown in other parts of Europe there isn't evidence of them being eaten in Britain until the 19th century. Since then is has become a British favourite.

Sprouts are the perfect December vegetable, they grow best in colder temperatures (between 7-24 degrees) hence why they have become associated with Christmas. They are also usually harvested in Winter meaning they are perfectly in season for Christmas.

Although there is not evidence for sprouts being part of Christmas until at least the 20th century, with the most likely explanation being grocery stores promoting them as they were in season at this time. The roast dinner also developed in the early 20th century so this also coincided, maybe sprouts were added to Christmas dinner for differentiation.

Apparently Henry VIII had sprouts with his Christmas dinner, but I hardly believe Henry would have enjoyed them!

Sprouts are actually really good for you, so next time you wrinkle your nose at them, just remember they're probably the healthiest thing you will eat in December ... so maybe put one or two on your plate!
