Bar Kokhba: The Jew who defied Hadrian and challenged the might of Rome by Lindsay Powell
Lindsay Powell writes this new release from Pen and Sword books which explores the history of Bar Kokhba a Jew who made a huge impact on the Roman empire.
I really enjoyed this book. I went in to this with no knowledge at all- although I've heard of Hadrian (mostly because of Hadrian's wall!) I most definitely haven't heard of Bar Kokhba and I'm so glad I was able to learn more about this fascinating and important story.
To give a brief overview for those who don't know, Shim'on Bar Kokhba was a Jewish military leader who led the second revolt between the Romans and the Jews. Some early victories meant that an independent Jewish state was able to be formed and held for over 3 years with Bar Kokhba as the leader known as the 'Nasi'. Although Emperor Hadrian did eventually crush this uprising the absolute extraordinary nature of the revolt makes for very interesting reading and gives you a real insight in to the sheer determination of Bar Kokhba.I don't want to go much further in to the background as Lindsay Powell does it a lot more justice than I ever could!
This book is extremely well written, and I love the contrast between the Roman story and Lindsay's own experiences and modern references. The first chapter of the book frames the style perfectly, and really kept me captivated to read more insights and research from Lindsay. It was easy to follow, sometimes with books about the Roman period you get lost in the names and dates but I found this book simple and enjoyable to read, and I came away knowing a whole lot more about the subject. As well as being enjoyable to read, the pictures and illustrations included just add even further to the richness of the book- you are able to connect with the story by seeing these and it really ties the whole book together. I think the subject matter of this book is also hugely important, personally I didn't know about any of the Jewish revolts against the Roman Empire, and as someone who has studied modern history more frequently it really helped build my knowledge and put some of the things I know from studying the 19th and 20th centuries in to wider context.
Overall I would highly recommenced this book and with the awesome blue cover it will definitely look good on your book shelf! Might be one to put on your Christmas list or if you're quick you can get it with 20% off over on Pen and Sword books now! Link here to purchase
